Intersectionality is a common theme in my artwork. As a queer, nonbinary, and biracial person, my artwork incorporates the multiple identities I hold and the issues that these communities face. As demonstrated in “The POC Project,” navigating spaces is met with privilege, discomfort, and a mixed sense of belonging. My grandmother, an immigrant from Japan, helped with my uprearing, and I culturally feel anchored in BIPOC spaces. However, I am not always perceived as Asian, and sometimes these spaces can also be a source of inner struggle. While recognizing my light-skin privilege, I also know that my identities and others' perception of me changes through time and space. Being queer, nonbinary, and polyamorous is simultaneously tangental and antagonistic to my ethnicity and upbringing, which adds additional levels of perception, unwanted and/or wanted. Art will always be a place that I will find solace.
